]]>We went to New Zealand to visit our daughter Sarah, who is living and working in Auckland with her boyfriend. We traveled through both the North and South Islands. An overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound in the southwest corner of the South Island in Fijordland was among the highlights of our trip.

]]>Fort Stevens Revealed

The battlements at Fort Stevens State Park in Warrenton, Oregon are usually thought of as being plain gray concrete, with interesting textures, but devoid of color. The colors that are there seem muted, but after spending time in the deep recesses of the buildings, these colors reveal themselves. Each nook, each cranny, has green moss, old leaves, and graffiti (undesirable as it may be), some in red, yellow, and orange. The old rails that were used to move munitions have rusted into majestic reds and oranges. These images show, even emphasize, these colors, to illustrate anew and different aspect of the old structures, especially those most deeply hidden.

]]>I love to drive slowly around Sauvie Island, a beautiful mostly farmland and wildlife refuge near Portland. I found a fascinating old truck with flowers in the bed and a madonna statue and have been photographing it periodically for months.

]]>These are images made at Ft Stevens State Park on the Oregon Coast as part of an ongoing project. I try to return there every few months; it is almost always deserted during the week, and in the cooler wetter months of the winter and early spring.

Most all are made with the 4x5 camera which allows control of depth of field and allows careful alignment of architectural subjects with precise framing.

]]>California is more than a state from the point of view of a photographer. It is an entire world of beautiful locations. These images cover a tiny fraction of the areas I would like to photograph.

Some were made travelling on my own and some at a workshop in December 2006, with Bruce Barnbaum, Jack Dykinga, and Jay Dusard. They are some of the great photographers, and raconteurs of our time.

]]>These images were made on a trip to California in October 2009. The trip began with a Yosemite Workshop at the Ansel Adams Gallery, taught by Ray MacSavaney. From Yosemite we went to Pacific Grove where we "enjoyed" the worst storm in 42 years. We visited Big Sur, Point Lobos and the Monterey area.

Some of these images were made during my own travels and some during a workshop with John Sexton and Ray McSavaney, two of my personal photographic heroes.

South Africa

]]>Since I was a child, I have had a dream of going to Africa to see and photograph the animals.

These images were made during a month long visit to South Africa in March 2003. I traveled with my wife, who was born in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and educated in South Africa. We traveled through much of the country, from beautiful Cape Town, in the far southwest, to Kruger National Park in the northwest, a journey of over a thousand miles. We visited three game parks: Addo Elephant National Park in south central South Africa, Kruger National Park, one of the major game parks of the world, in the northeast, with over 7,700 square miles, approximately the size of Rhode Island, and Hluhluwe-Omfalozi Park in Kwa-Zulu Natal, where major conservation work has been done with the white rhino. These parks belong to the animals; the humans are locked into rest camps at night. While driving, one is required to stay in one’s vehicle at all times. It was HOT, frequently over 100°F. My wife drove, very slowly, we both observed, and I photographed.

Storm Large

]]>Storm Large is a Portland actress and singer. As a result of her friendship with my daughter, she performed at the middle school where my daughter taught. This was a reward for the students who collected funds for our local children's hospital.

She was terrific with the students, patiently answered questions and performed as if she were singing for millions. She is sharp, smart, and fun to be with.

In the summer of 2006, she was on the TV reality show Rock Supernova and placed fifth but around here she is clearly number one. She recently starred in a wonderful production of "Cabaret" in Portland. She is currently performing in a fabulous one person show about her life, called "Crazy Enough."

These images were made with a digital SLR, ideal for this type of photography.
